Hailsham Chambers invites applications for a probationary tenancy to commence in September or October 2025, with a view to joining our award-winning team. We are primarily seeking applications from those due to complete pupillage in 2025, but we will consider applications from other candidates whom we believe have the potential to become successful members of Chambers.
We are looking for a motivated, ambitious candidate who can demonstrate excellent intellectual ability, persuasive communication skills and a genuine interest in one or more of our core areas of practice: professional liability, medical law, commercial law, and costs law.
Applications for probationary tenancy will be judged according to the selection criteria used in our pupillage selection process, which are set out on the “what we look for” section of our pupillage page.
The probationary tenancy will be structured so that the successful applicant can expect to be in Court regularly, but will also be provided with plenty of paperwork, together with training in Chambers’ core areas of practice.
We provide an award of £40,000, which comprises a grant of £20,000 and guaranteed billed earnings of £20,000 over the six month period of the probationary tenancy. We also offer support from a supervisor and a mentor throughout.
For more information, please view the Bar Council website.
Applications should be addressed to Heather McMahon and emailed to pupillage@hailshamchambers.com. They will be considered in confidence.
Your application should include:
If you have any questions about a probationary tenancy with us, please contact us on the above email address. We are happy to facilitate an informal conversation with a member of our pupillage committee prior to application or interview, and this can be arranged using the same email address.
Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Applicants may be called for interview at short notice from the middle of August onwards and should provide their mobile phone number on their applications.
Please note that, if you have recently been unsuccessful in seeking a probationary tenancy at Hailsham Chambers, we kindly ask that you do not submit a further application.
We want to recruit the best candidates from the widest possible pool of talent, irrespective of age, background, disability, gender, marital status, religion, sexuality, or any other protected characteristic. We adhere to and support the Bar Council’s policies on equal opportunity and non-discrimination.
