Richard joined Chambers in October 2012 and has developed his practice in all areas of Chambers’ work, including professional negligence, medical law, personal injury and regulatory and disciplinary work. He is ranked as a leading junior in Professional Negligence by The Legal 500, where he is described as ‘down to earth and practical, with superb drafting skills’.
Richard is regularly instructed on behalf of both claimants and defendants in a wide range of hearings before the County Courts and the High Court. He is frequently asked to advise and draft statements of case, particularly in professional and clinical negligence cases. Richard also regularly represents practitioners before regulatory tribunals.
Richard obtained a first at Oxford in Modern History and a distinction on the Graduate Diploma in Law at City University. During his BVC year, he won the Lincoln’s Inn Open Mooting Competition and the Crowther Shield Advocacy Competition.
Richard is frequently instructed in professional negligence matters, including claims against solicitors, barristers, surveyors, accountants and financial advisers.
In solicitors’ negligence cases Richard regularly drafts pleadings on behalf of both claimants and defendants. He routinely deals with solicitors’ negligence arising out of conveyancing, poor conduct of litigation, wills, employment law, matrimonial disputes, criminal law and tax avoidance schemes. He has a particular interest in under-settled personal injury and clinical negligence claims, as well as limitation disputes.
Richard was led by Michael Pooles KC in King (and others) v DWF LLP (and others) [2023] EWHC 3132 (Comm), a 23-day trial before Henshaw J, where the claimants alleged dishonest breach of fiduciary duty and negligence against their former legal advisors in the course of a 20-day multi-million-pound fraudulent misrepresentation trial in the Chancery Division in 2017.
Richard was also led by Michael Pooles KC and Spike Charlwood in the defence of an alleged £100 million conveyancing claim.

The 2021 edition noted that Richard ‘has fantastic attention to detail and is extremely thorough’, is ‘incredibly user-friendly’ and a ‘pragmatic advisor’.
Richard is routinely instructed in medical law matters and acts for both claimants and defendants. He frequently advises on merits, quantum and settlement strategy, drafts pleadings and appears at a wide array of hearings and high-value settlement meetings. He is regularly instructed in claims against GPs, orthopaedic claims, surgical claims, cases concerning lack of consent and dental claims. Richard also has experience of Equality Act 2010 claims in healthcare settings.

Education
Personal: Richard is a keen singer and pianist, and held a choral scholarship at Christ Church, Oxford. He continues to sing on a semi- professional basis. He enjoys most sports, and has the unenviable task of supporting Aston Villa. Richard also enjoys cooking, travelling and history (with a particular interest in 19th century American history).
